Stretch for fitness, July 3, 2000

Reviewer: Christopher Cooper (Carrollton, Texas United States) - See all my reviews

I've used this book for several years in all the sport activities that I have been involved in. From my teenage years to my early 30's - I have found the stretches in this book to be a worthwhile endeavor. The author provides several stretching routines for a wide variety of activities. Secondly, there are drawings, which demonstrate the correct way to do these stretches. Stretching is an important part of any exercise regime and this book helps out by providing a necessary guide to stretching. The author points out the dangers of overstretching and gives the reader good advice for their regimes.

Stretching is a masterpiece, June 21, 2000

Reviewer: Darcy Burner (Redmond, WA United States) - See all my reviews

So everytime I ever talked to a personal trainer, at some point they'd recommend some stretches and give me copies of some pages illustrating the kinds of stretches I should do. My friends who went in for physical therapy also received copies in exactly the same distinctive illustration style. Eventually I found the single source for all of the stretching advice I'd been receiving: Stretching, by Bob and Jean Anderson.

This book is amazing. The explanations and drawings of how to do the different stretches make it incredibly easy to stretch well. The descriptions of what it should feel like, what it will feel like if you're not doing it quite right, and how you can correct any problems are always right on target. There are stretches for exercising nearly everything, including some muscles it hadn't occured to me I had.

But the most valuable part of the book, in my opinion, are the stretching routines designed for everyday and for specific activities. I wake up in the morning to the Everyday Stretches routine, and I start the day feeling fantastic. I follow the recommended routines before new activites and am amazed to find that I'm hardly ever sore anymore. Hooray for Bob and Jean Anderson!

I've used this book to train and help prevent injury with Ski Patrollers, mountain rescue climbers, and even fencers. A "must have" for trainers of kids and active adults, be they, teachers, parents, guides or coaches. Used as quick reference or in preparing a complete program this book provides the necessary information in an easy to understand and well illustrated format. You can't go wrong by adding this to your library.

Excellent Book, October 27, 2004

Reviewer: Sarah "chisportsrehab" (Chicago IL) - See all my reviews

As others have said, this book is a wonderful title and is worthwhile to have no matter what you are doing, from sitting around and just going through daily life or focusing on a sport or activity.

It is laid out well, with clear instruction and you can find a strech for pretty much anything.

As in any physical endeavor it takes time to feel results, so remember to be careful and not force yourself into a stretch if it is new to you or your feel tightness anywhere.

I recommend this to people I see so they have a quick reference for items that will help them rehab injuries.

On reviewer mentioned that a spiral bound version would be nice tohave, and I agree. But that slight shortcoming does not take away from this book.

Great book to get in shape to..., September 14, 2004

Reviewer: kidnugget (Bakersfield, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I've studied goju ryu karate for almost ten years now and as a result have several orthopedic injuries (my knee, neck, and shoulder). They all make working out rather hard to do without agrivating injuries for several days, so I've gotten rather out of shape and fallen out of karate.

This book, however, has me on the mend. The stretches are great--very well thought out, safe, and easy to follow. The directions are easy to read, but most of the illustrations alone show you what to do without reading a word (though I do agree with other reviewers, they are a bit cheesey--but if it ain't broke, don't fix it!). I use the stretches to CAREFULLY isolate my injured muscle groups before and after I work out, and I've reduced my pain drastically.

I've stretched for years using the traditional stretches of my dojo that my sensei has shown me. These stretches go way beyond that level. In fact, I intend to give it to my sensei for xmas this year.

Another great feature of this book is the sections in the back for different activities. It has a quick run down of what stretches to do for various sports--karate, running, ball games, stretches in the office while sitting down, whatever suits your fancy.

If you're looking for a book on stretching, look no more. Add this bad boy to your shopping cart and move on. If my injuries were worse, I may not be able to use the stretches, but after seeing physical therapists and a personal trainer, I know enough about my body and my injuries to not push it. For recuperation or just staying fit and flexible and feeling good, this is a great book. When I'm done doing these stretches, I feel like I just mediated...

good for those who use computers all day long, August 3, 2004

Reviewer: Casey Perkins (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews

I'm a computer programmer, and the pain in my hands had gotten quite severe, to the point of considering changing careers. I thought it might be arthritic, but the doc disagreed, and "prescribed" this book for me. The three pages on finger, hand, and office-related stretches were worth the price of the book to me; 95% of my pain has cleared up.

We love Bill Phillip's book, and really believe that if you have a goal to become more physically fit it can improve almost every area of your life.  The changes that these people made in their live is absolutely incredible and only in 12 weeks in many cases.  Nothing shy of awesome.  Is this your year?  Do you really want to make a change in your health, life, and attitude.  Getting in shape is a great way to kiss stress goodbye.  This could be an inspiration and guide for you.  The video "Body of Work" that goes along with this is incredibly inspiring and only costs about $3.

Believe me, it works!, April 17, 2000

Reviewer: K. Allen (Fayetteville, GA USA) - See all my reviews

This is NOT a "quick-fix" program, it is meant to be a new way of life. If you do not have the motivation or the willpower, it won't work. But for me, it has made me a new person. I have so much more confidence in myself and am so proud of myself that I have the discipline to do this and I am seeing such fantastic results. I have gone from 22% body fat to 16% in 5 weeks. My cellulite on my legs is GONE.

It is also not a "low-carb" diet. You get plenty of food, and yes, the supplements are expensive, but you don't have to use them. I usually choose to because I don't want to fix 6 meals a day, but there are times when money is tight and I don't buy them for a while. You can also use nutritional bars for people whose work schedule makes it difficult to have a shake or a meal every time. The thing is, this is how you SHOULD eat, whether you like it or not. And I have saved money, even with the cost of the supplements, by not buying any junk food and not going out to eat as often. You can have delicious meals--it's not like you are deprived at all. Just no 2nd or 3rd helpings, which you shouldn't be eating anyway if you are trying to get into shape! It has truly changed my life as I start my 6th week on the program and I could not give this book any higher recommendation. It makes the whole thing so easy to follow the way it is explained--I call it my "bible" now! The book tells you exactly what to do and will motivate you to no end. And for the people who say the pictures are fake, they are not. I have my own "before" pictures as proof compared to what I look like now. Buy this book--if you are ready to do it, it will change your life. I cannot imagine sitting on the couch and eating a bag of potato chips ever again. I don't even have any desire to. For the people who are complaining that you have to belong to a gym or buy a lot of equipment--the fact is, if you don't incorporate weight training along with aerobic activity, it is not going to work. You might lose weight, but at the expense of your muscle mass, which you will also be losing. But actually, all you really need is a few sets of dumbbells and a barbell with some weight plates. You don't have to go out and buy a treadmill and a universal gym. I have tried every diet known to man, and I used to run 3 miles every day without fail, and I have never seen results like I have with this. It is wonderful to feel the same way after doing 20 minutes of intense cardio as I did after slaving for an hour at it like I used to. 20 minutes is nothing! No, it's not really *easy* to do, but who are all these people that expect getting in shape to be easy? Although for me, it is much easier than anything else I have ever tried because for the first time in my life, I actually look forward to working out. The nutritional plan is not difficult for me because I know at the end of the week I get a "free day" when I can eat whatever I want to eat. I have not cheated one time--not even a jelly bean--and I feel perfectly satisfied. Like I said, I don't want to eat junk anymore. And I had a sweet tooth that wouldn't quit before. As a matter of fact, I don't even look forward to my free day as much as I used to because I feel so much better eating healthy the rest of the week. I also have 10 times more energy than I used to. I highly recommend this book, and this way of life, to anyone who is ready to totally commit themselves to being fit. You will not believe the results and you will be glad you did it.

A good foundation for building physical fitness, August 14, 2000

Reviewer: "graveheart" (Stafford, TX USA) - See all my reviews

"Body for Life" is an excellent book if you're a fitness beginner who's trying to figure out how to get in shape and stay in shape or, perhaps, someone who's been working out and/or dieting for a while and doesn't seem to be making much headway towards losing weight and getting in shape. Phillips does a good job of explaining the basic building blocks of fitness and of debunking a lot of the more prevalent fitness myths. He covers the proper way to exercise, both aerobics and weight training, proper diet, not some fad diet but rather how to eat real food in a healthy way, and how to motivate yourself and keep yourself motivated to stick to your goals.

There are a few caveats, however.

This is a very basic book. Don't think you're going to read this book and then know everything you need to know about fitness. It gives you a good foundation to build on but it doesn't go much beyond that. In my opinion that's a good thing given the book's target audience of fitness beginners. It gives you enough information to get started but it doesn't overwhelm you with data. Be aware that once you get into the program and have a better feel for your specific needs, you may find yourself seeking other books for more information but with the information you get from "Body for Life", you'll be able to make better selections of what type of books to look for. If you're already in good shape, chances are you already know everything that's in this book and if there is something you don't know, it won't be worth the price to find out.

Phillips owns a company which manufactures nutritional supplements. Not surprisingly he pushes the use of supplements in this book. There's nothing wrong with using supplements but they're expensive and not really necessary. They may accelerate the process but you'll still get into shape following the program without them.

Fitness is a lifelong commitment. Don't look at the title of the book and think you're going to get into perfect shape in only 12 weeks. Phillips' program is about using those 12 weeks to develop a fitness program you can stick to for the rest of your life. Ideally, when you finish one 12 week program you'll immediately begin another 12 week program and so on until it's not a 12 week program but a way of life.

If you're a fitness beginner and not certain where to begin or someone who's been working out for a little while but doesn't seem to be making any headway towards your fitness goals, this is the book for you. It offers good solid information on the basics of fitness and how to set and achieve your goals. I highly recommend this book.

The program worked for me, January 6, 2005

Reviewer: A Reader in Kentucky (Kentucky) - See all my reviews

Before starting the program, I weighed 297 pounds. (At the time of this review I'm a 47 year-old, six-foot-two male.) About a year and a half later after beginning the "Body for Life" program, I weigh 205 pounds. I credit all of this to the motivation and information I had received from Mr. Phillips' book.

The program outlined in the book may not work for everyone. It did work for me. For the strength training, I use a very old Soloflex machine for three of my exercises. (The Soloflex had been very lightly used for the past 18 years prior to our buying the book.) In addition, I had to purchase several dumbbells to use with the strength training.

For the aerobics component, I now use a fairly inexpensive treadmill. I have placed the intensity levels as outlined in the book on the wall in front of the treadmill so that I can see what level I should be on during the entire workout. I have also placed my weight amounts and settings on an erasable board that can be easily viewed during my workout.

I basically ignored the advice for supplements, opting instead to incorporate protein in my meals as part of my eating plan. Before starting the program, I rarely ate breakfast. Now I eat the six small meals a day and am rarely hungry.

A few weeks after I had started the "Body for Life" program, my wife also started doing it. She has lost about 30 pounds in a year's time.

The workouts are not pleasant. In fact, the workout are not fun. However, there is a sense of achievement once each workout session is finished. It takes a great deal of discipline to do them. It also takes discipline to make the proper choices for meals. I found the meal portion control as stated in the book to be very sensible.

I tread fairly easily on "free days," the day of the week when the eating plan can be somewhat ignored. I keep photos of when I weighed close to 300 pounds out at all times, so a "free day" for me can mean a deviation from the way I would normally eat, but the deviation is not too great.

The program as presented in the book worked for me. However, I wanted it to work. Unless a person is ill, there should be no excuse for not exercising, especially the very reasonable amount of exercise that is recommended in "Body for Life."

"Body for Life" is not a perfect book. Stretching is not emphasized in it. However, I do find it to be a great book as the program worked for me. But ultimately, it is up to each person as to whether the program will work for him or her. As I tell myself on a regular basis, "the weights will not lift themselves."

No Carb dieting makes absolutely no sense at all, in fact carbs are
a very necessary ingredient in healthy, normal brain function.  The other thing that makes no sense at all about the Atkins diet and others like it is the simple fact that it is impossible to maintain and continue indefinitely.  Bill Phillip's,  Eating for Life, is a much more positive and appropriate step to healthy dieting and lifestyle.  You can learn more about it here...

XanGo, Access A Family of Powerful Phytonutrients

While most people know about the antioxidant benefits of Vitamins C and E, far fewer are aware of the incredibly potent antioxidant power of xanthones. Xanthones are natural chemical substances that have recently won high praise from numerous scientists and researchers. Xanthones have been studied for their medicinal potential, since they demonstrate a number of pharmaceutical properties:

- Supports microbiological balance
- Maintains immune system health
- Promotes joint flexibility
- Provides positive mental support

What's remarkable is that the mangosteen - not just the inner flesh, but the whole fruit - represents the single greatest known supply of these tremendously beneficial xanthones. The pericarp, or rind, of the mangosteen is particularly rich in xanthones, which represent the next generation of powerful phytonutrients; phytonutrients that will change the future of dietary supplements.

XanGo™ is a proprietary formulation featuring mangosteen whole fruit puree, utilizing all the xanthone-laden components of the fruit. The result is a heavenly delicious beverage that brings a wealth of incredible benefits.
