Downsizing Sucks!

Downsizing Sucks!

You’re working at your family’s welding business during the day, and then go to your second job at night. You’re 50-some years old, working as a cashier at Target. You always said that if you’re 40 years old and have a career that requires you to wear a name tag, then to just shoot you!
Not that there’s anything wrong with working at Target or wearing a name tag or working the family business. Those are all honest jobs. It’s just that after 20 years with your previous company, and with your education and expertise, you hadn’t exactly planned on ramping up to your golden years asking customers if they’d like to save ten percent on their purchase by opening a store credit card.
You heard rumblings about the company folding. But as far as you knew, the numbers were good. At least they were good. Then competition took over and the owners decided it was a good time to bow out gracefully. You were hoping you weren’t going to be one of the countless main wage earners to get let go. But sadly, you were. Unemployment ran out. You sent out literally hundreds of resumes and still nothing. Your spirits are down, you’re frustrated (that’s an understatement) and you even had to humble yourself to get some help from a local food pantry.
You’ve done all the online courses; you have tirelessly pounded the pavement and scoured the classified ads. You’ve even hit up all the online sources to jobs such as www.monster.com www.usajobs.com hotjobs.yahoo.com and about 800 other job boards that you regularly surf. If one more person tells you that a door closes and a window opens or that good things come to those who wait, you think you’re going to puke.
You have a family counting on you; so now what? For starters, keep plugging along. Keep on keeping on. You know a job isn’t going to fall from the sky, so you need to just accept that your job right now is finding a job. You are working and you’re working harder than most at this task.
More importantly you need to keep a positive outlook. Yes that’s easier said than done. But if you can’t control the circumstances you can control your attitude toward it. You can either look at downsizing as an opportunity to do something different or to learn something new; or you can view it by accepting that you’ve been dealt a bad hand of cards and now all you can do is play it out. Do not view yourself as a victim. No good will come from that attitude.
You wouldn’t have advanced nor had the longevity that you did in your former career had it not been for your wherewithal and internal drive. You need to find that strength again. If you’re still having a pity party, it’s time to get over it. If you’ve sent out that many resumes and exhausted what you believe to be all your leads and you’re still bitter and feeling sorry for yourself, it’s time to reevaluate. If you haven’t already accepted a job that you’re overqualified for and underpaid, then it’s time you did.
Pride can be our biggest downfall. Working a family business that you never wanted to, or working nights at the concession stand may not be what you envisioned for yourself. View it as temporary. View it as a paycheck. View it as an opportunity to network with people you would have never had the opportunity to cross paths. Maybe your next customer could be a business owner that you’ve been attempting to get an interview with.
As for the people who give you clichés – know that they mean well. People who have not been a mile in your shoes don’t understand it. They don’t know what to say. Remember downsizing sometimes sucks, but it may be forcing you into a new opportunity that you really love. Make the best of it.

Tighten Those Abs

Tighten Those Abs

Everybody wants a tight, firm midsection. You can tone your abs and get rid of that pot belly but there is one important point you first need to understand.
You cannot spot reduce anywhere on your body. You can spot tone your muscles in the area you are targeting, but you cannot spot reduce.
Here's an example. Look at your belly in a relaxed mode. Now suck in your stomach muscles.
Your pot belly is pretty much gone. Did you suddenly lose weight in that area?
Of course not! The same thing happens when you begin to properly exercise your ab muscles. The muscles become stronger and pull in the unsightly girth. Your abs look tighter and you look better, but unless you have actually lost weight overall, you have not actually lost any fat in that area.
To lose fat in the abs, you must lose weight overall. To make your abs look slimmer and sexier, you must develop the ab muscles.
One of the best pieces of exercise equipment you can purchase is an exercise ball, also called a swiss ball. Every time you do exercises on this ball, your ab muscles come into play. The abs are working to keep the ball steady and to keep you from falling off.
You can easily do two of the following exercises on the ball and increase the effectiveness.
1. The Bicycle
This has been proven to be one of the most effective ab exercises you can do. You cannot do this one on the ball.
Lie on your back with your hands behind your head. Lift your legs off the ground and raise your shoulders a couple inches off the floor.
Do not pull your neck with your hands. Push your lower back tight to the floor. Bring your left leg towards your chest while rotating your right elbow to touch your left knee.
Don't strain. As you return to the starting position, begin bringing your right knee in and rotate your left elbow to touch your right knee.
Work up to twenty repetitions each leg. Do them slowly.
2. Crunch
You are probably familiar with this one. Lay on your back with either your hands behind your head or on your chest. Legs are in a V-shape with your feet flat on the floor.
Once again push your lower back tight to the floor. Begin to raise your head and shoulders off the floor, tightening your ab muscles. Do not pull on your neck. You are only raising your shoulders a few inches off the ground.

At the top of the movement, hold for about one second, then return and repeat. Work to twenty repetitions. This is excellent on the exercise ball! 3. The Plank
Lie on your stomach. Feet are straight and close together. Push off the floor, raising up on your toes and your elbows. Keep your back straight and tighten your ab muscles. Hold for thirty seconds. Return and repeat for three to five repetitions.
Again, this exercise is excellent on the exercise ball.
Do these three exercises at least five days a week and the ab muscles will tighten up and you will look and feel great.

Custom Golf Club: Custom fitting golf clubs

Every golfer's physical capability and swing is distinctive. Many of today's best golf clubs can be custom fit for lie angle, shaft type and length, grip type and size. Custom fitting golf clubs involves several easy measurements and a quick self-assessment of your game. This custom golf club has become more than a fad that even not so professional golfers test its waters.

Custom fitting is the process for tailoring a golf club to suit your personal swing.

Whatever your level, with a custom golf club the aim is to ensure that if you do make a good swing, the club will be square at impact and should produce a straight shot.

Custom Golf Club How To's:

To custom fit your golf clubs, you need to know: your gender (male or female); your height in your stockings or socks; the distance from your wrist (where it bends) to the floor with your shoes off; your age; your handicap or skill level; how fast you swing a golf club; what club you use at the 150 yard marker.

Gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale for custom golf clubs. The golf industry uses different definitions of "standard length" for men and women.

Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine the length of a custom golf club that is appropriate for you. The starting point for club length can vary up to 3 ½-inch ranging from ladies to men plus 1 ½-inch. A tall person with long arms can very easily require shorter clubs than an average height person with short arms. About 80 percent of golfers are standard length.

Your age, handicap (if you happen to have one), self-assessed skill level, estimated golf swing speed and club you use at the 150 yard marker are all combined to determined the custom golf club's shaft flex that is appropriate for you.

Custom fitting can fix your slice. If you slice the ball it means that the toe of the club is leading into the ball which opens the face of the club. That may be down to a swing fault, but it could be because the club is too flat. So as part of the custom fitting process you can make the custom golf club more upright to help with this. This will mean that the toe of the club will be slightly off the ground at address to compensate.

There are different methods of fitting according to custom golf club manufacturers but ultimately they are all trying to improve your game. To begin with simple measurements such as wrist-to-floor, height and hand size are taken and will point you to the right size club and at what angle it should be to the ground. Then you will take a club and hit some balls. One method is to place impact tape on the bottom of the custom golf club and an impact board on the floor.

As you hit the ball the board will leave a mark on the tape showing whether the heel or the toe of the custom golf club is striking the floor first. The resulting mark will show whether the club face needs to be flatter or more upright. Then things get a bit more advanced. Analysis equipment can measure everything from your club speed to the side spin of the ball so that you can get maximum distance from your shot. You can also measure the launch angle of the ball, how much backspin you generate and impact efficiency - all which affect distance. The angle in which the custom golf club approaches the ball and the sidespin of it can help fix your game too.

Rather than bringing down your old clubs, it might be better to start from scratch. It's a big misconception that custom fitting is only for good golfers. Anyone can benefit. That said, if you plan to upgrade a new set of clubs with the same manufacturer they may be able to adjust your old set to become custom golf clubs.

Custom fitting won't cure all your bad shots. Coaching will sort that out. But if you do make a good swing, then the custom golf club will arrive correctly at impact and should produce a straight shot at your target. That alone will save shots during a round.

Lastly, custom fitting is often free of charge. But it is usually on the condition that you buy some clubs once you've been fitted. So it really depends on what your budget is. If you're prepared to buy a new set of clubs it's definitely worth getting fitted.

How to Attain and Retain Peace of Mind

How to Attain and Retain Peace of Mind

"Do not disturb." This sign is often times seen on doorknobs of hotel rooms. Obviously, the person on the other side of the door wants some peace and quiet. This kind of peace is superficial, one that is obvious and literal.

There`s another kind of peace most people aspire for. It`s peace of mind. Some people have peace of mind only when they are asleep. Perhaps this is possible only when they are physically tired or exhausted, and the urge to sleep is stronger than the need to have peace of mind.

However, having a disturbed mind will keep you awake night after night. Your entire well-being will be adversely affected. Your physical health will deteriorate. The longer this persists, the more extensive the damages will become. Don`t wait until the damage becomes irreversible.

Find the cause of your troubled mind. Trouble lies in the mind. Ask yourself what is disturbing you. Part of it is probably made up of fear, self-pity, insecurity, and failures, to name a few. All of these are products of negative thinking that pollutes the mind unnecessarily. Face your troubles with courage by casting out the negative feelings of fear and insecurity. Empty your mind of all these negative habits. Don`t leave your mind empty for long to prevent it from leaning back to the negative side.

Keep on casting out all negative thoughts by emptying them from your mind, and refill with positive and inspiring thoughts. Do this process as often as necessary - every time you think you need to. By repeating this process, you are practicing good habits aimed at keeping your mind free of negative thoughts and full of positive vibrations to achieve peace of mind. Ultimately, this habit will become part of your daily activities until you get used to it. Once you do, you will find everything you do to be positive based in an effortless manner.

You may ask, "Just how do you unload negative thoughts and load in positive ones?" One of the best ways to do this is by visualization. Picture peaceful scenes in your mind. For instance, you can initially picture in your mind a rainforest being battered by stormy weather. Branches of trees are vigorously swinging in all directions. Everything seems to be chaotic, just like a troubled mind. But storms don`t last. They move on. When they leave, sunshine or good weather comes in.

A troubled mind is like a storm in your mind. Once the problem is gone, you will have peace of mind. Try to build a strong foundation of positive attitudes so that when another storm hits your mind, you`re prepared to face it. This is similar to practicing positive attitudes. Going back to the rainforest on a beautiful weather, doesn`t it look and feel peaceful? This is how your state of mind should be - peaceful so that it can be harnessed to obtain an enjoyable life.

There are many other ways to generate a peaceful mind. Think of words that suggest a calm mind - words like tranquil (a tranquil sea), serene, harmony, and stillness. Read poems, phrases, and excerpts that suggest a peaceful mind. You can also join group talks where the discussion is centered on how to achieve a mind harmonious with peace, love, and happiness. If you prefer to be on your own, moments of silence can make you obtain peace of mind. The library is a suitable place to be in. Pick up a book that suggests peace of mind and you may be able to find other means to obtain your objective.

The Art of Space Clearing

The Art of Space Clearing

Efficiency does not only require a dynamic person, but an organized use of space as well. In your home and office, it will be extremely useful to maintain a good habit of clearing the place. After all, a spacious (or at least seemingly spacious) and well-maximized room helps ease the workload from your shoulder.

In designing and organizing your rooms and workspaces, here are a few elements that you could work on.

Color

Red, orange and other related hues create an illusion of warmth and small space, which people usually do not like. So for a cooler and more spacious look, it is preferable to choose among the hues of blue to green.

But in playing with colors, you may also have to consider the task of maintaining a good color combination among walls, windows, curtains, and furniture. In that case, light colors, especially those related to white (mother of pearl, ecru, ivory, beige and taupe) are easier to match with home and office decorations.

Size

While it is generally useful to have a roomy space, having such amenity may become a burden since it compromises communication among inhabitants of the house or members of the office. Most importantly, it may demand huge amounts to purchase and maintain.

Meanwhile, little spaces may be organized to create illusions of space. Furthermore, well-placed cabinets and shelves may serve various purposes: as space dividers, as decorations, and as file organizers.

Ambience

An intelligent manipulation of lighting and home decorations is the most important element in providing a good ambience. Yellow lighting generally contributes to the coziness of a place, as well as a lot of sofas, floor cushions, candles, native ornaments, smoked glass windows, and light wooden furniture. On the other hand, white fluorescent bulbs and a lot of plastic and metals (steel chairs, synthetic decors, glass windows and Formica tabletops) make for a busy-looking office. Meanwhile, pastel colors and cartooned wallpapers provide for an innocent, child-like look perfect for relaxing.

Utility

In organizing space, especially for an office, the other elements may have to be compromised for utility. Excessive decorations are generally not advisable since they interfere with the workflow. Furniture must be limited to filing cabinets, tables, and chairs.

At home, utility is to be observed as well. While keeping some memorabilia may be healthy, it will be helpful to get rid of old possessions that only accumulate dust and serve no purpose at all aside from becoming the breeding ground of insects. For example, old stuffed toys, old books, and newspapers add to the clutter. We could just donate them to people who need them more.

The Science of Sports Success

Athletes work out hard to be the best. They should. If amazing, record-breaking feats are what they aim for, they will have to do more than workout hard; they need to be wiser. And to be wiser means to know more secrets.

Power in sports is more than muscle power. It is basically knowing how to move correctly so you won`t waste efforts doing useless motions. Knowing the mechanics involved helps you economize on body movements to conserve energy.

Knowledge of human kinetics (science of body motions) will also help you identify the muscle and bone groups involved in a body movement so you will know where to add attention to your workouts. A general workout (involving the whole body) can do you good, but specific workouts (a specialized workout program for a particular skill) can hone a skill to perfection. This is where human kinetics comes in.

In a general workout, an athlete may well be training hard daily, building up strong and bulky muscles- looking super fit- and yet unable to do well in his game, especially in a competition. It`s like a shotgun training where you aim and pull the trigger, hoping to land some shrapnel on the target. And for all you know, you may be firing lots of shells around and yet have the target virtually unscratched. There is no point being a hulk of a loser in tip-top shape.

Champions are brains and skills, first of all; and then muscle power, second. You cannot ignore one in favor of the other. Brains and skills mean that you know the sport well, and also the body mechanics involved. Your hectic training must be based on these. You focus your effort, time, and resources only on what`s essential, aside from the general workouts you need. Thus, you add to your potential of being a champion.

Many athletes today give the impression that sports is all about packing whatever bulky muscle you can build into your body to make it fit like a horse. With the advent of modern fitness gadgets and much improved weights devices, the trend is towards stressing muscle power- especially when hyped by the media. But muscle training per se does not equate to being a champion. When your acumen and skills measure up to the challenge at hand, you win. And this means you have to train accurately according to what the sport requires. This spells out nothing but athletic kinetics.

Body Language: Be a Good Listener

Does your body language say you're a good listener?

Sure, you listen when needed (or do you?), but do other people see you as a good listener? Listening skills are essential for good relationships and are also a critical skill in many professions, especially the helping professions. Whether you're maintaining a happy marriage relationship, counseling someone with problems, or coaching members of your team for business success, good listening skills lead others to feel more comfortable. They will have more confidence in you and hold you in higher esteem.

Did you know that body language has a major impact on how people see you - even more impact than your words? So, what says 'good listener' and inspires in others who speak to you the confidence that you really are listening? Your body language, of course! Even if you really are listening to every word, you won't be seen as a good listener unless you have the right body language.

The body language of a poor listener has many of these traits -leans away or even turns away slightly, arms folded, maybe a bit of impatient toe tapping, and frequently looking elsewhere. Or, if someone starts to read then you know for SURE they're not listening! And of course if your body language suggests you don't want to listen, the other person will feel less comfortable talking with you and will be less likely to confide in you. This is a good recipe for creating distance and miscommunication in a relationship.

The body language of a good listener shows five characteristics that can be remembered through the acronym "SOLER".

S - Square-on
Face the other person square on. If you're turned away, you won't give the impression that you want to listen.

O - Open-posture
Folded legs, and particularly folded arms can be subconscious signals that you really don't want to hear what the other person has to say.

L - Lean-towards
Lean slightly towards the other person. This indicates an interest in what they're saying. Leaning away from a person tends to indicate disinterest.

E - Eye-contact
Maintain normal eye contact with the other person. If you keep your eyes down, or keep looking away, you can give the impression that you're not a comfortable or willing listener.

R - Relax
Don't be too formal or stiff. A relaxed posture suggests that you're comfortable in the role of listener, and ready to hear everything the other person has to say.

So if you'd like to improve your relationships, on and off the job, start by practicing your listening body language and SOLER!

Understanding Breast Cancer

Every woman who hears the words ‘breast cancer’ feels a sense of fear. What is breast cancer and can you prevent it? Here are some facts about breast cancer every woman should know…

What Should I Know About Breast Cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women after skin cancer. While it is also possible for a man to get breast cancer women are 100 times more likely to develop it than men.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women. Lung cancer is the leading cause. The chance of dying from breast cancer is one in 33, but that number is decreasing as new forms of treatment and early detection are being implemented.

There are several forms of breast cancer that occur in different areas of the breast. Most breast cancers are treated with radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. It depends on the type of cancer, how far it has spread and where it is located which treatment program is determined for any individual.

Great strides are taking place to treat and prevent breast cancer. Women with a high risk should discuss the possible preventive measures currently available with their doctor.

Who is More Likely to Get It?

The American Cancer Society reports that 1 in 8 women in the US will experience invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.

While every woman is at risk there are certain factors that increase the likelihood a person may develop breast cancer. Not having these risk factors does not mean you will not develop cancer just as being at a high risk doesn’t mean you will develop cancer.

Smoking, age and family history are the common factors that are assessed when determining risk.

While smoking can be controlled, age and family history cannot. The older you are the greater the risk that you will develop breast cancer – almost 8 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. If women in your family developed breast cancer you are also at an increased risk.

Certain genetic changes increase the risk to as high as 80% that a woman will develop the cancer. Testing for these changes can help a woman and her doctor discuss preventative measures that might be taken.

Caucasian women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer but African-American women more often die from the disease. Asians, Hispanics and American Indian women are less likely to get it.

Starting your period (menstruation) before age 12 or going through menopause after 55 slightly increases the risk.

Having taken the drug DES (diethylstilbestrol), which some women were given in the belief it would prevent them from losing a baby, slightly increases the risk while radiation to the chest earlier in life greatly increases the risk.

Being overweight, use of alcohol, long term use of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and not having children have all been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Using birth control pills may increase the risk and should be discussed with your doctor.

On the other hand exercise, healthy eating (especially reducing the intake of alcohol and red meats) or having had children early in life and breastfeeding for as long as 1 ½ -2 years have been linked to a REDUCED risk of developing breast cancer.

What Can I Do to Reduce the Risk?

Since early detection is so important it is vital that women learn how to detect lumps in their breasts and understand what precautions must be taken. Those who are more at risk of developing cancer should take extra steps to detect cancer as early as possible since the lumps found by self-examination are much farther progressed than those found by other forms of detection.

While a doctor or nurse can show you how to perform a BSE (breast self-exam) the American Cancer Society still recommends women in their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical exam every three years and once a year after 40. After 40 most women should also have regular mammograms to catch cancers earlier.

Changes in the breast including dimpling, swelling, discharges other than milk or any other change to the nipple should be brought to the attention of a doctor. While most of changes can be linked to non-cancerous causes catching the cancer early is definitely the most important factor in surviving breast cancer.

Bicycling Gear - Function Over Form

You have all see them around the town where you live. A grown man or woman, riding a two wheeled contraption that looks like a larger version of what you bought your kid for Christmas last year. Wearing tight clothing, helmet and gloves, they look more alien than human as they ride around in strange attire and what looks to be a most uncomfortable position.

So what is going on with bicyclists? Why do they wear weird looking clothes? Is all that gear they have really necessary?

A bicyclist is always in a constant struggle against wind resistance. It is a battle that can never be won. Everything from the bicyclist's helmet, shorts, shoes and bike are made to make the fight against wind resistance easier.

A rider's position on the bicycle is designed to reduce the area of the body that comes into contact with the air. The more aerodynamic the position on the bike the less power the cyclist has to produce to maintain, or achieve, a given speed.

Bicycling shorts have always been the brunt of many jokes from those who do not understand the function they serve. The shorts are skin-tight to reduce the air resistance and to keep the fabric from rubbing and moving next to the skin which may create a sore spot.

Of course, what may be the most desirable feature of cycling shorts is the padding which is built into the seat. Because the bicycle is built in such an aerodynamic form, the seat is made to be as slim as possible. This does not make it very comfortable to sit on which is where the padding in the cycling shorts makes a difference.

Your ability to pedal into the wind resistance is what propels you down the road. Many cyclists use a special shoe and pedal combination which helps deliver a more efficient pedal stroke to the bike. The shoes clip into the pedal via a cleat on the bottom of the shoe that connects firmly onto the pedal mechanism. This allows the cyclist to focus more power on the pedal and can both pull up and push down on the pedal stroke.

Helmets are necessary due to safety concerns. However, the shape of most helmets are built so that they are as aerodynamic as possible. The front of the helmet is rounded toward the side and back. Numerous air vents are built in to the helmet for comfort on hot and humid rides.

Bicycling gloves are worn to help absorb the road shock. The gloves have padding built into the palm. Most bicycling gloves do not fully cover the fingers. The reason for this is it makes it much easier to grasp fully the brakes when needing to slow down or stop. The gloves do not necessarily help with aerodynamics, but they do make the ride more comfortable, which gives you more energy to ride and fight the air resistance.

Bicyclists love to ride. They may look different in their gear, but it is out of necessity that they wear what they do. The fight is against wind resistance. They look no stranger than a football player or race car driver in their gear. The difference is a bicyclist has to use the gear in public every time they venture out to ride his bike and wage the battle against air resistance.

4 Brilliant Tips to Speed Read Faster than Ever

4 Brilliant Tips to Speed Read Faster than Ever

Many people, particularly students, would love to be
able to absorb information faster. But before retaining
information, they have to go through the first stage of
learning, which is reading.

For many individuals who are pressed for time, speed
reading has become a necessity. However, it's not just
the reading part that is important. Equally essential
is for the reader to fully understand the words coming
out from the book or paper.

Here are some great tips to read and comprehend faster.

1) Relax.

If you're in the stressed mode, it would be much more
difficult to concentrate; hence, it would just be a lot
harder for the information to sink in.

2) Know what you want.

Focus on the areas that you really need to learn. Some
people read all parts of a book, when all they need to
know is a specific chapter.

Know your priority. If you need to find out about a
certain subject, go to the Table of Contents and search
for the heading that best suits your need. If you need
to learn more, then adjust accordingly. The important
thing is to weed out the stuffs that you don't
currently need.

3) Get rid of the structure words.

Did you know that around 60% of the words we read are
structure words? Examples are the words "the, or, and."
They are essential in the structure of the sentences;
but when you ignore them, they basically mean the same
thing. They only serve to beautify, yet you can
understand what you are reading even without them. Try
not to focus too much attention on structure words.

4) Practice, practice, practice.

When I started exercising with weights, I can only lift
the lighter ones. As the time goes by, I slowly add more
and more weights as my body tends to adjust and become
more comfortable carrying heavier ones.

The same concept goes for speed reading. Set a goal.
Figure out how fast you can read, then create a plan to
increase your ability.

If you can read 200 words per minute, set a goal to
read 250 words a minute. After accomplishing this feat,
set a goal to read 300 words per minute.

This takes time and practice, but the effort is all
worth it. If this is your first time to set such a
goal, read first those materials you are familiar with.

Carry on with more difficult ones as you progress. This
way, you're not overwhelming yourself with understanding
different new words and at the same time developing your
speed reading skills.

What is "Pay-Per Click"? "Pay-Per Click", is an easy to understand advertising strategy. There are around 300 million searches at major search engines everyday. This causes 80% of internet traffic. Placing your websites on these search engines is very important in reaching as many potential customers as possible. But in order to be seen and clicked most frequently, your website should be viewed at the top most of the search list. Most people only reach up to the third page of a search engine so the lower your rank, the lesser the chance you will be clicked. In "Pay-Per Click" advertising, you pay to be always visible on the internet. You select keywords or key phrases about your website, and the highest bidder ranks the best. There is no upfront cost. 'The Wealthy Barber' - a Beginners Guide to Wealth Building

If you, like most people, have not seriously considered what steps you should take for planning your finances and are now planning on buying a house, getting married or having children, you will do well to read David Chilton's book 'The Wealthy Barber'. It will not matter if you have never heard of a mutual fund or even balanced your checkbook. If dry financial reading is not up your alley, you will STILL find 'the Wealthy Barber' easy reading. It will have you fluent in financial planning in weeks. The key to David Chilton's success with his book is that it is written as a story, rather than a manual. You follow three 30ish individuals as they build their financial houses from scratch. They get their information from one of the most knowledgeable and financially secure individuals in town - the barber. The gem of this story lies in the fact that the barber shows how income is not the biggest factor in planning for financial prosperity - proper planning is. And you can have your own finances in order by reading and applying the tasks he assigns his 'students' while they visit for their monthly trim. 'The Wealthy Barber' has been favorably commented on by newspapers and financial reviewers because it does not stress budget or a reduced standard of living. It is these steps which often sabotage the best intentions of individuals. The sooner the methods are applied, the easier it will be to see their effects while maintaining your lifestyle, but it is always better to start now than not start at all. 'The Globe and Mail' calls 'The Wealthy Barber' "...a perfect gift for young couples trying to live comfortably and save money in an increasingly tough world". Is that not a gift worth receiving?
'The Wealthy Barber' will show you how to plan for your retirement, save for large purchases or future needs, invest, protect your family and avoid being victimized by financial blunders by exposing some financial products and services which you may not need, but are sure to be sold.
Although the story is set in a Canadian town, the general methods and training provide a valuable education in personal financial planning.
Having a clear understanding of your financial situation and preparing a plan is no longer a mystery. Although some decisions require the guidance of an expert, arming yourself with the right questions and basic knowledge will ensure your best financial outcome.
In today's world financial education is often sorely lacking. Taking steps to educate yourself, and pass that education on to your children will protect your family and provide an abundance whether you are current millionaires or not.
